On Friday night, I drove to Franklin to meet up with Jed to see Colter Wall in concert at the FirstBank Amphitheater. I guess it’s considered normal for a “southern boy” to be in to country music? But Colter Wall doesn’t really fit the mould. He sounds like a 70 something year old three pack a day singer, but he’s not yet 30.
He sings songs about the west, about live in the saddle, but also songs about love, success, failure, and some of the modern worries we have. He’s a throw-back, of sorts, before country music became so commercial.
Zach Bryan, especially his earlier stuff, has sort of the same sound. Tyler Childers, too.
These folks might be “y’allternative”? I don’t know. I do know that the music makes me think. It’s easy to listen to, but deep enough for anyone to try to analyze.
And my bones do break and my hands do shake
As I lie in the wake of time’s cruel slaughter
But if I die before I wake
I’m gonna see my Caroline
