Watched “A Man for All Seasons” the other day. In the movie, Thomas More prayed:

Dear Lord, give us rest this night,
But if we must be wakeful, cheerful.
Caring only for our soul’s salvation,
For Christ’s sake. Amen

So much in so few words.

First: If I am wakeful, I’m unsure about being cheerful. But the biggest ask, “Caring only for our soul’s salvation.” In that one line he asks for mercy, grace, to be filled with love for our fellow man, to be free of temptation, and so much more…

Not a bad prayer if we understand for what we’re asking.

While this consistent with what is known of More, this prayer was, I think, written for the movie.
